How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Filter?

Changing your building’s HVAC filter might seem like a small detail, but if you neglect to track and schedule this important step in your building’s maintenance plan it may lead to costly downtime. Commercial HVAC air filters are designed to trap and hold many types of particulates and contaminants that can affect your health. For example, dust, dirt, pollen, mold, lint, metal, plaster or wood particles, hair, bacteria and microorganisms are all things air filters work to keep out of the air.

How Often do You Need to Change the Air Filter?

Controlled Indoor Environments

At a minimum, HVAC unit filters in controlled indoor environments, such as office spaces, should be cleaned or replaced quarterly. One simple way to determine if it’s time for your filter to be changed is to hold it in front of a light, if you can’t see the light through it, the filter should be cleaned or replaced. To help keep it top-of-mind, be sure this step is included in your maintenance plan every quarter to make sure it’s done.

Outdoor Enclosures and Highly Active Systems

Commercial environments involving chemicals, manufacturing, or an abundance of outdoor air, should be checked monthly. This may sound costly, but the cost of the filters will extend the life of your unit and save you money in the long run. If filters are clogged with dust and debris it will reduce airflow, which can lead to inefficient system operation and can lead to equipment failure.
