5 Tips for Selecting an HVAC Contractor

When installing or replacing an HVAC system at your building, who you hire is crucial.

Many things should be taken into consideration including energy consumption, performance and environmental concerns.

Installations can be complex jobs, and should be completed by licensed and experienced professionals. Using the wrong contractor can result in loss of time and money, and can be an inconvenience to your business.

Choosing the right contractor to complete your project is important.

Here are five tips for selecting an HVAC contractor:

Research

Take the time to look up the company you are interested in hiring to avoid scams and inexperienced staff. Find out how long the company has been in business. You want to choose a vendor that is established. Make sure to look at the company’s website and customer reviews.

Licensed and Insured

Making sure a contractor is licensed and insured is extremely important. Often, unlicensed contractors do not have the skills and qualifications to become licensed. Also make sure the company is listed as additional, insured and protected. If you choose the wrong contractor, you can be held financially liable if there is any damage or injury.

Ask About Their Technicians

Ask the company how many years of experience their technicians have. You’ll want to make sure the person/people completing your project has/have at least two years of experience in the field, and the company participates in ongoing safety and technical training. Technicians also need to be licensed and certified in refrigerants.

The heating and cooling industry is constantly changing and it’s important for technicians to be up-to-date on their skills.

Be Careful with the Lowest Bidder

We’ve all heard the saying, “you get what you pay for”, and this phrase is especially true in the contracting business. Paying a little bit more will often result in quality service, updated equipment and, possibly, above average maintenance agreements. Always ask for a detailed estimate and feel free to ask why a vendor’s prices are set a certain way.

Inquire About Technology

In today’s world technology is evolving at a rapid pace, your HVAC provider is no exception to this. Ask the company you hire how they complete inspection reports, monitor progress and ask about the equipment they are using.
