Pricing of Rock Salt

Although Detroit’s snowiest winter on record has ended, its impact lingers. As a result, salt prices and availability have taken a major hit. “We’re hearing bulk salt prices that, in some cases, have doubled compared to last year,” said SIMA CEO Martin Tirado in an interview with the Detroit Free Press.

Contractors in Detroit and are facing steep increases in winter salt prices, yet that’s if suppliers can even guarantee delivery of the quantities needed.

In Oakland County, the commission is expected to see a 25 percent price increase from last year. Last year in Macomb Township, the Department of Roads paid $47 per ton of salt. This year, it shot up to $77 per ton.

Managing salt supply will be extremely important this coming winter season.
